Science is now suggesting the behavior of elementary matter, that’s quantum field theory, is simply too great to be possible. That is sub-atomic particles, which comprise all matter in our universe, have created a universe which simply should not be. Put another way the fine tuning found in elementary matter is very ideal that any small variation in the structure or behavior of elementary matter would be disastrous across our universe.
The truth is, numerous respected scientists are beginning to believe our universe could not have been created without outside assistance. That is, given the physics of sub-atomic particles being what they are, our universe required a creator, divine or otherwise, to exist to start with.
This is an interesting point to say the least. Imagine, we live in a universe by which 1) a creator had to tinker with matter to allow for our very existence or 2) the composition of matter, alone, defies all of the rules of science and common sense yet allows matter to exist and build upon itself. If you believe the structure and behavior of elementary matter is a trivial subject then I ask you to reconsider.
Everything we see in our universe is built out of common elements which often are bundles of molecules that once more are created from atoms and again made out of elementary particles — bosons and fermions. One only needs to consider the wonderment of biological life or the scale of a galaxy to appreciate the full meaning of these elementary building blocks. They are, in every sense, the core substance of all which exists.
So since we know what human beings and galaxies are made from, where do we go from here? The question remains who or what made elementary matter what it is? Did a creator create this grand universe we all live in or is our very existence strictly a matter of luck?If science is correct about the bizarre structure and behavior of elementary matter then the consequences are really profound for mankind. Many people, as you can imagine, will merely say science currently supports the existence of God. That it was God, actually, who fine tuned elementary matter to allow for a universe which could support big structures such as galaxies, stars and planets as well as organic life forms.
Whether or not God or another intelligent being created elementary matter has been a debate upon our planet, in one form or another, for many centuries and will most likely remain a central human debate for many centuries to come. Regardless of such debates it currently appears, there’s some evidence a being, divine or not, fine tuned elementary matter for a specific purpose and whatever that purpose was or is humanity appears to be a part of it.
Although many people would disagree I believe humanity, if humanity does certainly survive, is on a course to solve most if not all the riddles of the universe and will one day prove, beyond a doubt, if elementary matter is a bizarre freak of nature (fantastically lucky) or the work of an intelligent being. Frankly I’d prefer the later, not because it’d change my life significantly but because the very thought of a being so profoundly powerful stirs my imagination.
