The History Of Murano Charms

Murano glass charms are very fashionable these days, lots of companies use them alongside silver and gold to make charm bracelets to add more colour and beauty.Murano glass beads each are hand worked, Venetian glass still worked into the glass beads. Due to them being handmade, each of them are totally unique..

Murano glass working is said to have started in 9th century Rome, most of the influences coming from Asian and Muslim countries.. At this time the Venetian city was mostly wood, so due to a fear of the entire city catching fire, all glass works were moved out of the city to Murano in 1291.

Glass-makers in the city walked around adorned with finery, swords and immune to local laws.Glass-makersfoundthemselvesmarried into some of the richest families in Venice, but due to this they were not allowed to leave the Republic.

By the end of the 16th century, three thousand of Murano island’s seven thousand inhabitants were involved in some way in the glassmaking industry. Technologies such as enamelling called smalto, threading gold into the glass known as aventurine and milk glass called lattimo were used.

Techniques the same as the old ones, are surprisingly still used today. Murano glass charms are still constructed in the number of Murano glass factories.

Creating Murano glass charms is a hard task, the glass charms are created from heated silica which becomes liquid at very high temperatures. When the glass is changing from liquid to solid the glass workers add the beautiful colours and reshape them.

Many of Murano’s glass factories still stand today, the oldest is inAntica Vetreria Fratelli Toso, founded in 1854.
