I have plenty of silver jewellery accessories and I have noticed that some of them require more care than the others. When I say more care, I mean more cleaning and maintenance. Silver pieces have to be maintained simply because they become lackluster after some time. Using them can cause them to get subjected to natural variables. This contact makes them decrease some shine. You cannot dress in jewellery that has become dull.
What I figured out after buying a few pieces of silver accessories is the fact that a number of them are actually coated with rhodium. Rhodium is a metal that gives silver a mercury-like coating. The silver piece then looks freshly designed. The rhodium coating, as per what I’ve known, acts as a safety barrier, preventing corroding substances from getting onto the silver surface. I have also learned that rhodium comes with a few downsides.
I began to figure out that a few of my silver rings, bracelets and necklaces are only coated with a pretty thin layer of rhodium. After some time, this thin coating could fade away and this causes dull stains to appear on the accessories. Rhodium plating is really not long lasting. My rhodium coated silver jewellery were easily scratched. The scratch marks may not be quickly visible but a thorough examination would make them obvious. The negative thing is that the marks can’t be accurately polished. I had brought a number of my silver accessories to a jeweler to get them sanded off to remove the rhodium plating. Sanding shows the real silver underneath the coating. I cannot have my existing rhodium plated jewelry collection sanded off because some of them have elaborate designs.
If you have valuable silver items, you have to prevent them from getting in contact with chemical compounds. Powerful cleaning substances at home could damage your priceless accessories. I have laundered my garments once without removing my bracelets. I thought the metal won’t be affected by laundry soap however I was wrong. A number of soaps have powerful substances that cause tarnishing of silver. Bleach is another household chemical that must not be in contact with sterling silver. I should have removed my bracelets when washing.
Now bear in mind that the environment where you work or live could change the condition of your silver jewelleries. What I realized is the fact that silver will tarnish faster in polluted environments. Because most of us are in the metropolis, the place where air is smoky, our silver pieces are expected to wear out fast. This is because there are more silver compounds in the atmosphere. Sulphides are likely to react with silver to lead to tarnishing.
If you’ve got wedding jewellery accessories made from silver, I want you to take care of them. Polish them when necessary. There really are harmless silver cleaning products out there. Do not hesitate to ask a professional jeweller to assist you with silver cleaning.
