The ‘Knock-off’ Drinks! 21 Days To Cut Back…

The lifestyle of your average Hospitality professional is often not the healthiest. Combined with some irregular hours (some more than others), late nights and fast paced environments can often lead to the bar down the road for a quick ‘knock off’. Wanting to gain back a little fitness lost since January holidays, and a healthier lifestyle for myself and family in general, I have decided to do a little research in the breaking of habits.

I read somewhere that if you do something continuously for 21 days straight, it becomes a new habit, and the former one is broken. So, for the next 21 days, I am not going to drink after work, and perhaps not at all. My daily progress will be noted below, and we’ll see how the habit is looking in 21 days time…

…Part 2 to follow next week!

Day 10, Fri 1/4: Nope. It’s over. I caved. 23 beers at the pub, just finishing off a bottle of red watching the footy… Haha April Fools!!! Lovely wife picked me up from the station around 4.30pm, quick shopping mission, and a quiet night on the couch. Did find 2 Fat Yaks in the fridge to keep me company during the news, but that’s it. Over a week down and going strong!

Days 8/9, Wed 30/3 & Thurs 31/3: Two days where I had some divine intervention? Or bad luck?? Went home from work early on Wednesday evening after cleaning out the Collins Place Chemist of all tissues, demazin and codral cold and flu pills. Feeling a little light headed actually! Spent Thursday recovering on the couch. At no stage was I tempted to drink (thanks to the directions on my multiple meds), although a friend once told me 3 shots of gin is the way to sort out a sniffle. No gin in the house…

Day 7, Tues 29/3: 4.30pm finish from a latish lunch service today. Loads of paperwork waiting for me! Would be easily washed down with a cold beer! No, just the paperwork… Getting easier!

Day 6, Mon 28/3: After Day 5, see below, a 7am breakfast shift wasn’t the perfect way to start the week. Not surprisingly, an 11am knock-off wasn’t that tempting. The poached eggs with Hollandaise sauce however, was.

Day 5, Sun 27/3: Day off, and my 2nd wedding anniversary. A beautiful day in the Yarra Valley.

Day 4, Sat 26/3: “Guys I can’t believe we just had one!”, says Melbourne Hospitality Agency, TSR Corporate Services (hire waiters) Operations Manager and co-founder Jason, as we step briskly out of the Stamford Hotel in Rowville. Yes, Rowville. I can explain…

Having booked a large job a few months ago at 1330 Conference Center, it was always going to be difficult to avoid buying our team of 20 staff a beer afterwards. I have no problem with this. We probably would have had more than one given a different environment! At 1.15am on a Saturday night, the Stamford probably isn’t the place you want to unwind after looking after 330 people. Police, security and a gentle brawl greeted us on arrival, and the further ejections and screaming whilst enjoying one pot hardly put us in the mood for another. Oh well: for the best hey??

Day 3, Fri 25/3: Easy pickings today. No beer required after a 4pm finish, with a 5pm movie and sneaky dinner on Victoria St after. OK, so 2 VB stubbies may have found their way to the bustling restaurant, filled with the local Vietnamese population getting their noodle soup fix, but that’s fine- it’s no staffy! Great food too.

Day 2, Thurs 24/3: The past few weeks I’ve been partial to a cold one around 4pm. However, given my little experiment, after getting on the train at 4.00 this afternoon, I have been to the gym, cooked dinner, done the washing and settled in to the season opener between Carlton and Richmond. Feels good knowing I’ll wake with a clean head in the morning, all ready for a double shift tomorrow (waiters for hire)! How will I go on a Friday night after 13 hours hands on???

Day one, Wed 23/3: Working an evening event, and in this case a dinner for 30px, is a little trickier because we’re fairly wound up by the end of the night. I’m planning to relax with a book or other reading at home instead, and hoping to fall asleep fairly quickly for an early start again in the morning. Confirmed! A very tired 6 month pregnant wife and an entertaining Footy Show was enough to relax and occupy my mind before sleep… Tempted for a quick one though given the amount of open wine left after our event! One day down…
