Digital Photography Tips

If you have a digital camera and not quite satisfied with the images it delivers, you will definitely benefit from applying the digital photography techniques mentioned in this article. The problem in this industry is that many individuals believe that they need to possess an expensive camera in order to deliver masterpieces. Although more expensive cameras have special additional features to aid the photographer, it is a complete myth to believe it is the only way to create breathtaking and portrait-worthy photos.

It doesn’t matter if you have an entry level or a so-called professional digital camera, these basic digital photography secrets will enhance the quality of your photos leaving you totally satisfied with the results.

There are many digital photography tips and tricks over and above which I have written here, each one able to be explained in great depth. Even the most inexperienced photographer, however, will benefit using these digital photography tips.

First Things First

In the photography industry there is some familiar terminology which is constantly used. No matter how mundane it may seem, it is important, even for beginners, to become familiar with a few of these terms in order to assign correct names to your camera’s equipment. For the purpose of this article, only a few terms are explained in order to improve understanding of the concepts and tips provided.

Flash: is a built-in device in most modern digital cameras and is used to illuminate the subject and its vicinity in an instant. It’s a “two-edged sword” that can either enhance your photo by eliminating shadows or make your pictures appear flat and uninteresting.

Exposure: is the total amount of light allowed to enter the camera’s sensor, but can be controlled by exposure settings such as shutter speed, aperture and sensitivity. Knowing how to manipulate light is the most important skill any photographer can have.

Shutter speed: In the most basic terms, shutter speed in digital cameras can be explained as the amount of time allowed for your image sensor to ‘see’ the scene. Difference in shutter speed could mean the difference in blurry or crisp images.

ISO settings: Your camera’s ISO settings simply refer to how sensitive the sensor is to light, in other words, how well it can capture photos in very light or very dark environments.

Digital Photography Tips and Tricks

Enthusiastic photographers want to spend less time reading and more time taking photos. Here are some basic digital photography techniques which will render immediate improvement of your photos:

  1. 1.    Take great portrait photos by…
  • Avoiding distracting backgrounds
  • Creating even illumination by making use of natural light. If this is not possible, use studio lights, multiple flashes and/or a bounce flash or combinations thereof
  • Avoiding the use of single flashes aimed directly at the subject or the vicinity as they create stark shadows and tend to make your images appear flat
  • Avoiding that part of your subject’s face is within the shadows unless you know what you are doing

           1.  2.    Obtaining the best exposure for your images

Exposure plays a vital role in taking the perfect shot. Most modern cameras, however, do have an automatic light detection function and will attempt to choose the best exposure settings for you. When using the automatic function the shutter speed and aperture will be adjusted accordingly. If you are not yet familiar with your camera or do not have the time to get to know it, rather use the automatic setting of your camera when an immediate photo is needed.

1.  3.    Use high ISO settings in situations…

where movement needs to be taken into account and you need to avoid a blurry image. This is usually due to subject motion or camera shake. A higher ISO allows for faster shutter speed and is ideal in the following situations:

  •  Indoors where no flash is used
  • To extend flash range for longer distances
  • When fast action shooting is required
  • When cameras are handheld and you are attempting to capture images at large focal lengths
  1. 4.    When taking landscape shots….

remember to avoid capturing the horizon in the centre of the picture. Not only does this divide the photo in two, but it also fails to engage the viewer; rather focus on either the foreground or the sky.

  1. 5.    Use Computer Software programs to….

increase the overall look of your photo if you cannot adjust it with your camera. There are many software programs available and quite often are free. You can sharpen your images through filters with these programs and even remove “red eye”. Photoshop is one of the more ideal programs but even Microsoft Picture Manager, or Gimp, which is free, can remove red-eye. The software that accompanies your camera usually has a simple, yet effective editing function as well.

  1. 6.    Use tripods for long distance shots

Most digital cameras have a nifty zoom function, but caution is needed in zoomed in pictures because it becomes extremely sensitive to even the slightest camera shake. Tripods may be bothersome to carry around, but if you plan on capturing wildlife images, for example, they will play a large factor in the end result.

With these basic digital photography tips and tricks, you will enjoy the ultimate satisfaction of portrait-worthy photos, and you may want to learn more to blossom your creativity. Professional looking photos are created by knowing how to control your camera as well as having the artistic ability to recognize or create good compositions.
