Live Band Or DJ

When you throw a special event, your guests are going to remember two things most – the music and the food – so you must ensure that your entertainment fits your needs and impresses your guests!

Live Band or DJ

Whether you decide to have a live band or disc jockey play at your special occasion won’t matter to your guests as long as they’re entertained and enjoying themselves. Your preference is what decides, and there’s no right or wrong answer to this age-old question. Keep an open mind, and think back to all the weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and bar/bat mitzvahs you’ve been to and think about which form of party music you enjoyed the most.

Generally, reggae, jazz, big band and universal groove-worthy songs are delivered best by live bands whereas popular hits from today or a large mix in genres might be presented better by a DJ.

First consider who your guests are and what they might enjoy. Is this the same as what you’ll enjoy? If you’re all on the same page, going with a live band usually offers and exciting, fresh atmosphere, but if you don’t expect to gel with a lot of your guests, a disc jockey can offer more of a variety of songs and music types.

Whether you go with a live band or DJ, the band leader should be a master of ceremonies and get your audience involved – no matter what, you want your guest to put on their dancing shoes without any reservations. Sometimes a live band knows how to interact with guests more easily, but a great DJ personality can also seal the deal.

You always want to interview more than one entertainer, and you might even consider interviewing a few DJs and a few live bands to compare. Watch your contenders perform a gig or two to see how they interact with guests before making your final decision.

Budget

On average, a DJ costs less per hour than a live band because you’re just paying for one person to entertain your audience. But you must remember that a live band offers several talents, more instruments and more equipment. You’re paying for each member and his/her specific talent.

Venue

Depending on where you’re hosting your event, you might be limited on whether you can have a DJ or live band or not. Check with your venue first to see if they have any restrictions on the number of musicians allowed or pieces of equipment brought. Think about the room’s acoustics as well as access to outlets.

Once you’ve made your decision, make sure to book your party entertainment as far ahead of time of the event as possible. Live bands and DJs get booked quickly and are sometimes reserved years in advance!
