The Changes In Architectural Photography

Architectural photographers for years have carted around heavy bags and cases full of equipment all around the world. One case held the camera rig, stands, film holders, a loop, dark fabric and a range of lens boards. Inside duffel bags a giant tripod, light stands, gobos, gaffer tape, gels, flares and reflector cards. This was a rare sort of photographer. They spent countless hours adjusting minute increments. Correcting vertical lines. And adjusting viewpoints underneath a dark-cloth as they slowly checked the pictur’es sharpness. Their eyes bulged out, as their brains worked out the the wrong way up, revolved image before them. They were forever meticulous down to the millisecond of natural light required for the proper exposure.

Ultimately, a film holder would be inserted in the shoot as they lifted the A-slide revealing the film to the inner belly of the 4×5 camera. A press of the plunger cord opened the aperture to its precise coordinates letting light continuously fall across the film before closing it off. Next the A-slide was pushed down as you flipped the film holder, opened the B-slide and revealed the second sheet of film. Repeating as required until you felt you had the shot. Before moving your camera and all the rest of the gear to the next location to set it all up again and fire off 1 or 2 sheets of film.

Fast-forward 100 years into the digital time of photography and you’ll find a new type of architectural photographer. No longer restricted to a film case and two sheets. No longer strapped down to an eye-loop underneath a dark material, architectural photographers are beginning to create new methods using software interfaces. They are now not without a darkroom as your digital darkroom in the form of a laptop PC can be by your side during each shoot.

However the difficulties concerned in design photography – attempting to capture the basis of a building, the lines, the light, the environment – are just the same.
