Although the majority of Glamour Photos are produced in studio conditions, beauty artists can make the most from natural lighting and make some fabulous on-location shots. Though Sun is the only and primary source of natural light, there are various effects created by the position of Sun on the sky, the time of the day, and the interference of atmospheric irregularities, and the range of light that we get from the Sun is so vast that it can never be totally reproduced by artificial sources.
To start with the several kinds of lights available from the Sun, an aspiring photographer needs to know simply about the three times of the day to begin working on natural light sources: early morning, overhead sunlight during the day and the light we get in the late evening.
The light we get in the morning does not last very long, however, this is considered one of the best lighting conditions because of the angle and the warmth which is good for glamour images. When the Sun dawns, its beams fall at a very sharp angle and create some dramatic side-lighting which glamour photographers really love – it is soft and diffused, and it looks really glamorous.
Evening light is almost the same as early morning light that we get from the Sun, however, early morning light is clearer than the evening light because the days activity stir up dust in the atmosphere and there is some smog as well in evening light. In addition, after a hot day the ground sometimes cools down and steams, thus creating haze.
The final type of daylight to work with can be used at noon or in the afternoon, when color temperature of light is no longer orange but more like yellow or blue. Shadows are usually rather harsh at this time, and the light comes from overhead, making this particular period quite hard for Glamour Photography activities. The contrast between light and shadow becomes extreme due to focused light falling on the model, and most cameras cannot cope with it, losing details. As a beauty photographer, you can still make such conditions work for you by shooting glamour images with enhanced tonal contrast.
Consequently, you can always cope with almost any natural lighting conditions, provided you have skill and imagination – then your efforts will be rewarded with some fabulous glamour photographs. Beauty photography is an art, and natural light only helps to unveil another side to it – very romantic and sensual, just as our sun-lit world.
