BOTTOM LINE: Isabelle Fuhrman puts in an excellent performance as the psychotic Esther, but the rest of the film is so perfunctory and lamely directed that there is absolutely nothing to seriously advise it.
THE GOOD: Watching an incredible efficiency from a youngster is something to behold and 12-year old Isabelle Fuhrman does an amazing job portraying the disturbed Russian youngster Esther who is adopted by the somewhat dysfunctional family of Kate (Vera Farmiga) and John Coleman (Peter Sarsgaard). Morning the loss of her still-born daughter, Kate and John determine to adopt Esther following creating a warm connection on their first meeting.
BOTTOM LINE: Despite becoming much more evenly handled as a film, and nonetheless really funny, “Bruno” will not be as successfully funny as “Borat”, and also the way sequences are edited makes the proceedings feel a lot more staged than what they really are.
Scenes involving Esther manipulating every of the loved ones members, especially the two children, are involving thanks to Fuhrman’s performance, and she somehow manages to convey a deeply cold malevolence which is very watchable. “Orphan” relies on its intriguing premise and Fuhrman’s efficiency to generate scenes of tension and character suspense, and in this respect, the film functions on some levels.
THE GOOD: Sacha Baron Cohen is at it again, this time with Bruno, a gay Austrian fashionista who wants to grow to be super-famous. As with “Borat”, Cohen unleashes this offensive stereotype on Americans who usually do not know any better, and pretty often comes up with hilarious results. For example, Bruno desires to do a fashion shoot for himself with youngsters and his interviews with the mothers must rank as downright embarrassing for those mothers as they essentially agree for their babies to do anything he suggests. This God-fearing person is prime fodder for Bruno, as will be the obligatory “make enjoyable of a crowd of red-necks scene” when he manages to turn a staged fight in a boxing ring in to a love-making session with his assistant. “Bruno” is a really funny film which manages to push the boundaries of comedy along with the genre of the mockumentary in general.
