The Positive Effects Of Scented Candles

For many years scented candles have been, and remain hugely popular with many age ranges. They are received by women in their twenties and upwards, and even men can enjoy the delicious aromas that are released through burning them.

There is a huge variety of styles to choose from. Some of them are designed to eliminate odors in the home. These can be strategically placed within the home to combat problem smells such as your beloved pet dog, the smoking area or close to cat litter trays.

If you are looking to fill your home with delicious scents to help sell your home then there are many varieties which can help seal a deal. Real estate experts recommend the smell of fresh coffee and baked cakes or bread. These can be found from many specialist brands.

Scented candles are often described as romantic. Some of the most sought after fragrances are the ever popular rose, vanilla and the spicy scent of sandalwood. Women tend to prefer lighter fragrances such as mint, rose and jasmine.

In recent years discerning customers have sought out scented candles which are made using pure essential oils, rather than synthetic fragrances. Reed diffusers, which are another popular home fragrance choice also use essential oils for their fragrance. Like all candles, these come in solid form and as they heat up the oil melts and acts like a more traditional oil burner. They are a great way to fill the room with beautiful fragrance without the messy business of mixing oils or cleaning out the burner. These candles are ideal for relaxing in the bathroom or filling a larger space with your chosen perfume.

You can find kits which teach you in a simple step-by-step guide how to create your own scented candles. These are simple to follow and are perfect if you have a surfeit of essential or fragrance oils which you are not quite sure what to do with. The oils are concentrated so you will only need a few drops for each candle that you create.

You can tailor the fragrance to any special needs that you may have. Certain smells are known to help your relax, and many of the oils have positive effects on your body. Take lavender for instance – it is ideal when you are feeling under pressure and in need of some relaxation. It can also be used by your whole family. Others which are ideal to relieve tension include cedarwood, ylang ylang, and chamomile.

You can use scented candles to help set the right atmosphere at special times during the year. One of the most popular selling aromas for the Christmas holidays is mulled wine or cinnamon. Once you inhale them you can immediately feel more festive and your house feels more homely. It is a powerful yet subtle method to help the whole family get into the spirit of the season.

Whatever the reason these simple and often inexpensive luxury scented candles can have many positive health benefits on every member of the family. You can help set the mood for that romantic meal together, get help to deal with stress or simply create a lovely environment which everyone can enjoy.

Reed Diffusers -The Perfect Gift

Whether you are searching for something different for a birthday, Christmas or a special event,  or you are looking for a unique gift for a close friend or companion or you are simply trying to create a stylish look for your home, what about home fragrances?

Home fragrances have grown enormously in popularity in the last decade from the days when the only choice available was a cheap mass-market plug-in, or, even worse, the dreaded air freshener which smelled worse than the smell it was purporting to disguise.

Of all the choices of home fragrances, which include scented candles, room sprays, incense sticks and a variety of diffusers, perhaps the most attractive and appealing of all is the reed diffuser. Reed diffusers are hugely popular as presents and there are a number of reasons for this.

Firstly there is the visual appeal of reed diffusers. They are available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and designs, not to mention, of course, in a vast selection of different fragrances.

In essence reed diffusers consist of a number of different items which are simply put together to give you the final product. These include the reeds themselves – which should be made of rattan, not banboo or wooden sticks – along with fragrant oil which gives the diffuser it’s scent and a jar or other container to hold the oil and the reeds.

The rattan reeds are usually a natural, dare-I-say-it “wooden” colour but some of the more elegant designs have black reeds. Once these are placed in the container of oil they give your living space an almost oriental appearance and look much better than any electrical diffuser or oil burner. The jars which contain the scented oil can also be extremely attractive, ranging in design from a simple yet very stylish etched glass apothecary-style jar to more ornate styles in frosted glass or even dark or different colours of glassware which lend the final version of the diffuser a very attractive appearance.  There are even some brands whose reed diffusers are made up from reclaimed hand-blown Venetian or Murano glass and these make the most beautiful gits for a loved one or friend.

Reed diffusers come in a range of sizes including small items suitable for use when travelling. These diffusers make an ideal gift for anyone who is constantly travelling out of town on business. They can be easily popped into a travel bag, briefcase or suitcase to be opened up when the recipient gets to their hotel. They afford even the dullest of hotel rooms an air of sophistication, helping the weary businessman or woman to unwind at the end of a busy day’s work.

When it comes to picking a reed diffuser as a gift, or just as a well deserved treat for yourself, why not give some thought to choosing a number of these small travel diffusers in a variety of different fragrances to make up a gift set which any recipient is sure to love. Your choice could be made up of a choice of aromas which your friend or loved one appreciates, or else you could make your selection based on a theme – perhaps a selection of diffusers in floral scents such as rose, freesia and gardenia, or else a variety of invigorating aromas such as ginger, clove and sandalwood. Alternatively, if you prefer to go for a larger reed diffuser you are sure to find one that would be perfect for use as a decorative focal point in your loved one’s home – perhaps sitting pretty above a fireplace or as a  lavish centrepiece for the dinner table or console.

So you see, irrespective of the occasion, scented reed diffusers give you the chance to buy your friends or loved ones a truly thoughtful gift, one which fits in perfectly with your recipient’s own sense of style and personal preferences. And the good thing is that they needn’t cost a fortune. Even if you choose reed diffusers from some of the world’s leading brands you will discover that they are relatively modestly priced, meaning that when you are gift shopping you can afford to pop one or two in your shopping bag for your own use as well! What more could you ask?

Reed Diffusers – The Modern Alternative To Scented Candles

Reed diffusers are becoming more popular as an increasing number of people become aware of them. Generally, people look to scented candles to improve the atmosphere of a room, from its look, to the aroma the candle gives off when lit. That brings us nicely to the principle point about reed diffusers: no flame is required to allow them to release their delightful scents. Reed diffusers do not work in the same way as a scented candle – most noticeably no flame is required. They also give your room a more modern, contemporary appearance than scented candles.

A reed diffuser is constructed from an attractive jar filled with fragrance oil, often made using essential oils depending on the scent chosen. The jar can be any shape, but needs a thin neck to hold the reeds up. The jars come in many attractive colours and can be chosen to match to blend in with the colour scheme of your room.

The reeds are made from a genuine reed, not bamboo or wood, and are thin and porous, constructed internally of a number of narrow cellular capillaries that enable the oil to be drawn upward by capillary action and evaporate at the top, thus releasing the scent of the oil into your room.  The usual lengths used for such reed diffusers are approximately ten inches, twelve inches and fifteen inches long. Try to use around ten to fifteen reeds which will allow a decent amount of oil to be absorbed and then later diffused into your room.

These wonderful fragrance diffusers give off a scent for months, and the best way to keep them long lasting is to place them in an area near a door or window, or where people will often pass by, so that there is movement of air. By doing this you can extend the useful life of your fragrance diffuser, ensuring oil does not block the reeds but keeps making its way through them by capillary action.

One of the advantages of this type of room fragrance is that you can replace the oil by washing the bottle with soapy water to remove any oil residue, and you can then reuse the jar with a different fragrance oil.The reeds can be replaced as and when this becomes neccesary. Therefore, not only is it safer than a scented candle, but it also offers better value-for-money than a candle when it comes to enhancing the appearance of a room.

People with pets or young children may find that scented candles are not an option. It might seem too dangerous to leave a candle burning in a room when you have a cat springing from shelf to chair or a child fascinated by the naked flame itself. Electrical diffusers drain your electricity, are not as attractive as a reed diffuser and are very impersonal items. A reed diffuser allows you to choose the design of the jar, and the choice of fragrance will often suit the mood that you want to create in your room.

You could choose lavender for a calming effect, or orange for stimulation.  The range of reed diffuser scents is excellent, and you can even have fig or sea mist as your choice of perfume. Simply think about the fragrance you think would best suit both a particular room and the mood or ambiance you are looking to create. People remember smells, and they can trigger our memories, so the scent of a room can often have a significant effect on mood through the memories they release.

People can use reed diffusers in practically every room in their home, from the living room to the bedroom and the bathroom. Businesses use them in their office space, in their reception areas and in their washrooms. It is much more pleasant to enter a wash-room, say, in a restaurant with a lovely attractive reed diffuser or two lined up by the sinks than a plastic air freshener, or even worse – a tin of air freshener ready for you to spray yourself.

There are so many places to put one of these fantastic jars from the home to the office to the store; it is a good choice of diffuser, better than electrical , safer than a candle, reusable and eco friendly. One final thing which should be mentioned is that as the jars can be so attractive, then the packaging these diffusers come in is also frequently often beautiful, so that you would not think twice about giving them as a gift to someone. Many people buy reed diffusers as gifts and if you take time to decide on the aroma that would suit the person’s living space then you would be giving them a wonderful thoughtful present.

Home Fragrances: Scented Candles Or Reed Diffusers?

When you are considering home fragrances, do your thoughts turn to scented candles or the more modern electrical diffusers?  When you are turning your home into a beautiful place to live and relax you will generally make careful choices of which fabrics to use, which carpets to buy, the colour of your paint or the pattern of your wallpaper. You take time in choosing the sofa and chairs, the coffee table and the pictures.

Then you turn to the accessories which add that extra something to your decor. It is the vases and the grasses, the statues and the flowers, that make a real difference and stamp your personality on each room.  One important factor to add to the ambiance of your home is the use of perfumes to make the room not only look good but also smell good.

Using scented candles offers four distinct advantages to a room that cannot be emulated by any form of diffuser, particularly by an electrical oil diffuser:

A.  The Smell

Scented candles give off a fabulous aroma and you have a massive range of scents to choose from that not only smell great but also can help to change your mood. There is a broad spectrum of scents available, from the soothing such as lavender, to the invigorating like ginger or bergamot. You can have a variety of floral smells, and others such as the popular vanilla or peppermint aromas.

The scent given off from a candle seems to be more natural than that of an electrical diffuser. There’s nothing like walking into a room with lovely scented candle.  Some people prefer incense sticks, but they can’t hold a candle to a candle!

B. The Looks

The looks of a candle are far more attractive than an electrical diffuser. There are many different types of environmentally friendly candle such as those made from soy which last twenty to thirty times longer than normal paraffin wax or stearine candles. The looks are fashioned not only by their colour, but also in their wide range of shapes and designs.

There is the simple tea light, used not only as accent lighting but also as decorative floating candles and to heat scented oils. They are also used as votive candles (candles used for prayer), and get their name from their origins as small candles used to heat small teapots or kettles. Larger candles, fashioned from layers of differently coloured wax, are available in a wide range of sizes, colours and designs, and are much more decorative than scented oil diffusers.

C.  The Stands

The ornamental stands available for candles can make a tremendous difference to an otherwise ordinary room. You can use the traditional style of candlesticks for longer candles, and a variety of ornamental stands and trees to hold shorter votive candles, both inside your home and out in the garden. Scented candles are useful in a range of settings – they bring a warm glow and beautiful scent to an al fresco dinner or barbecue and of course, they are often regarded as at their best helping you relax while enjoying a long, luxurious bath. You can also purchase extremely attractive candleholders to add to the creative design of your room.

D. The Light

The fourth advantage is that of the light a candle produces. There is nothing more attractive than the flickering glow of a scented candle. Just imagine the lights switched off in your living room or bedroom and the shadows given off by the low glow of a flickering candle. The lighting is romantic and warm and comforting, not even dimmer switches can beat the glow from a candle.  It wins hands down against an electrical diffuser for this benefit alone.

The wonderful thing about candles is that they can be placed in any room and they will not only add to the decor, but the scent will fill the room with a beautiful aroma changing its feel as you enter it. From having tea lights floating in your bath to using decorative candles in your bedroom for a lovely romantic glow, they offer a degree of flexibility in their use that an oil diffuser can never match, particularly an electrical diffuser.

Your lounge could be made into a cosy area of rest with the scent of lavender floating around the room as you relax after a busy day, the warm glow of the candle attracting your eye. You could even turn your kitchen into an aromatic delight with scents to make you feel good while you prepare meals or just sit and relax with a magazine.

Why choose an electric oil diffuser and use up your electricity when you could use something far more attractive which stimulates your senses with light and smell, and can be part of a great design feature for your home? If you are worried about melting wax then choose a jar candle or tea lights which do not have the problem of wax dripping down the candle as it is all contained in the jar. These are most attractive and safe for your home.

That is how you make your house a home, with attractive scented candles topping off the creative design of each room. That is why so many people use them and why they are so popular.

Using A Fragrance Reed Diffuser In Your Home

It is obvious to anybody that you are using a fragrance reed diffuser in your home the minute they step over the door. The scent from reed diffusers is a delight to your olfactory senses and is completely free from smoke or any other interfering medium that can detract from the sheer pleasure of the smell.

Many people use scented candles, and these are also a fabulous way of giving your home a marvelous smell, but many prefer the pure smell of a reed diffuser. So what is a fragrance reed diffuser, and how does it differ from a candle or an oil burner or evaporator? They work in a similar way to a conventional oil evaporator except that reeds are used to retain the aromatic oils.

The diffuser consists of a number of reeds that act as the wicks. Reeds, such as rattan, are essential since they have an absorbent honeycomb structure, unlike wood or bamboo. Neither wood nor bamboo are suitable for use as diffusers, because their structure is too dense and does not permit sufficient absorbance of the oil.Trying to take shortcuts by using cheaper alternative sticks, such as wooden skewers, will not yield the desired results.

The oil itself should be specifically intended as fragrance oil for reed diffusers and will generally have a low molecular weight so that the size of the molecule doesn’t prevent it absorption in to the structure of the reed. Most other oils will not work due to their excessively large molecular size, and neither can they be used to dilute fragrance oils to make them last longer or go farther.

Around 10-12 narrow reeds are normally used, and placed into a bottle containing the light fragrant oil.  The oil is absorbed by the reeds, diffuses through them and is then evaporated at room temperature into your room. It is a pure smell because no fire or smoke is involved. The fragrance is delightfully fresh as long as you use oils designed specifically for reed diffusers – normal fragrance oils, such as you would use in an evaporator or burner, are too heavy and thick to be of much use in such a diffuser.

It was stated earlier that you cannot dilute fragrant oils with other cheap oils in order, and in the same way you also cannot add some fragrant light aromatherapy carrier oil to them to achieve the same thing:  that does not reduce the molecular size of the oil molecules, just dilutes it so that the reed acts as a filter allowing the lighter scent-free oil to be absorbed but not the fragrant essential oil.  Reed oils are chosen for their absorption properties as well as their fragrance.

You can use a relatively low molecular weight substance that is compatible with oils, such as dipropylene glycol, but you will need to make sure of this and that you don’t ruin your oil with anything that will clog up the pores of the reeds.  It requires an experienced fragrance chemist, familiar with the chemical nature of fragrant oils, to properly formulate oils suitable for fragrance reed diffusers.

The reeds you use should be cut to about twice the height of the bottle so that half the reed is in the bottle and half out of it, and your bottle can be anything from half full to full of oil. Do not be tempted to stint on the amount of oil you use as this may mean the fragrance is not properly absorbed by the reeds. So a 10 inch bottle can be filled from 5 inches up to 10 inches with oil and the reeds should be cut to 20 inches. A six inch bottle should contain 12 inch reeds, and so on.

A final tip is never to reuse reeds. Although it might appear that you should be able to do that, oils thicken with time and the air in your room can also contain dust, so the reeds can become clogged up with oil and dust and prevent proper absorption.

Among the advantages that a reed diffuser offers over scented candles is the fact there is no flame, and hence no fire hazard, and it therefore cannot go out. Because they operate without the need for heat or power they are more convenient than electrical diffusers which need an electric socket to work properly.  There is also no heat:  heat can degrade and damage fragrant oils while a fragrance reed diffuser requires no external energy source other than the ambient temperature of your room.

What are the benefits of fragrance diffusers; why do people use them? The primary use for a reed diffuser is, of course, to help your home smell fresh, neutralising the smell of cooking or other unpleasant odours.  However, they are also calming and soothing. People will use fragrance reed diffusers in the same way that others will use incense sticks or cones. They are a simple pleasure of life just as a hot relaxing bath is after a hard day at work.  You don’t have to justify it, just enjoy it.

Using a fragrant reed diffuser in your home can provide a relaxing and satisfying end to a long day.Armed with a chilled glass of your favourite wine and an enjoyable read, what better way could you imagine to end a busy day?

How To Use A Reed Diffuser

Most people who have one do not understand how to use a reed diffuser – at least correctly.  Sure, they can get it going but how to get the best use from one often escapes them. Not only that, but for some, even the basics behind fragrant reed diffusers are baffling. Not through any fault of theirs, but simply because they are not sure of the theory behind the way they work.

Here, then, is a brief review of what reed diffusers are and how to use them to get the best from them. Keep in mind that ignorance on this topic is fine, because you are not alone and that the vast majority have no idea of what the term ‘diffusion’ means let along where reeds come into the equation!  That is why so many try to use bamboo, cocktail sticks or even twig cuttings from their garden. They most certainly do!!

What are Reeds?

First, how reeds work.A reed is made up of hundreds of little air pockets. Once the reed is placed in the oil, the oil works its way up through the reeds, filling the little pockets and diffusing the scented oil through the atmosphere.  This will only happen if the viscosity of the oil is low, and if the molecular size of the fragrance oil is small enough to enable it to do so.  If the oil is too thick, then it will either not penetrate the reed pot or will not be drawn up inside it.

Fragrance oils are developed both to penetrate the pores of the reed stems and to travel up through its tissues. It is also able to be evaporated from the surface of the reed into the atmosphere, and so provide the lovely and soothing fragrance that is the purpose of its existence.

Use the Right Oil

So, to make your fragrance reed diffuser work properly, you must use the recommended brand of fragrance oils and also the instructions on how to set up the diffuser.Just fill the container – usually a bottle or decorative jar – approximately half way up with scented oil, used specifically for reed diffusers. Use reeds which are roughly twice the height of the bottle or container holding the fragrant oil.  Cut any longer reeds to twice the height of the bottle, and then put them into the bottle.

Make sure you use proper reeds or rattan because wood and bamboo will not work. These are not sufficiently absorbent – for best results you must use reeds. The reeds will absorb the fragrant oil which will subsequently evaporate from the reeds and produce this fabulous fragrance that will fill your entire home.

Tips for Use

Although setting up your reed diffuser is easy, and getting it to start working is a very simple task, there are still some problems that you can come across, and here are some of the more common and how to overcome them.

a)  If your diffuser has reeds already partially immersed when purchased, remove them and turn them upside down so that the ‘dry’ ends are now immersed in the oil. That will give you an immediate fragrance hit and then continue to evaporate offering you a continuous source of fragrance.  You can do this again whenever you want a scent ‘boost’ from your diffuser:  just turn the reeds round and allow the wet ends to evaporate.

b)  Only use the number of reeds you need. Small spaces such as a home office, bathroom or toilet need fewer reeds than your lounge so remove those you don’t need and keep them moist by wrapping them in cling film.

c)  Many commercial and industrial premises are not able to use scented candles because of fire regulations, and fragrant reed diffusers are an ideal substitute for them. While on the health and safety aspects, children should not be give access to fragrance diffusers because not only can spills cause damage to surrounding surfaces, but the oils can also catch fire if they are close to an ignition source.

d)  Always use a coaster under your diffuser. This is not because of the risk of burning or scorching – after all, no heat is involved – but the fragrance oils which are used can cause staining, so it makes sense to position your diffuser on a tray or coaster for protection.

e)  Never dilute or try to thin fragrant reed diffuser oils with water, thin engine oils or any other form of thinner because they will be either incompatible with the oil or will be of too high a molecular size to be absorbed into the pores of the reed stem.

Many people have their own opinions of how a reed diffuser should be used, but always keep in mind the meaning of the term ‘diffuse’.  The oil has to be absorbed by the reed and diffuse throughout its cellular structure so that the same oil can evaporate into the air in your home. If you use an oil that is to high in molecular size to do this then you will have a serious problem in getting your reed diffuser to work.

Follow the instructions on how to use a reed diffuser and you should be fine.

Scented Candles And Reed Diffusers: Aromatic Solutions For A Sweet-Smelling Home

Scented candles and reed oil diffusers offer you a means of making your home smell sweet and allow you to relax in a room or even have a bath breathing in beautifully scented air that even the ancient Greeks would believe to be heaven. Incidentally, a reed oil diffuser is not one that diffuses reed oil, but that is fashioned from reeds that enable oil to evaporate from them after being absorbed by the effect of capillary action.

The Greeks, and also the Romans and Egyptians, knew what happened when the oils extracted from flowers and certain oily woods such as sandalwood and cedar were heated. They knew that the plants and woods, and their extracts when they came to understand how to separate them, provided a wondrous aroma to the air when they were heated to a certain temperature, but not quite high enough to make them burn.

They also recognized that certain plants and trees initiated specific reactions or effects in those that breathed the heavily scented air.Different scents have different properties. For example, jasmine is widely regarded as having a calming, soothing effect, while lavender can help aid restful sleep. In effect, they had discovered aromatherapy which is believed to be at least partially responsible for the therapeutic benefits of scented candles and reed oil diffusers.

Most people are aware of the benefits of aromatherapy, and even more of how better they feel when their bath is scented with a wonderful perfume before they go to bed refreshed and smelling great. These benefits are not just restricted to bath oils or perfumes, but even the air that you breathe can be scented by use of scented candles and reed oil diffusers.

You must know what a scented candle is, but are you aware of the variety of perfumes in which they are available, or even of the different forms of candles that you can purchase online? For example, scented tealights, or a jar candle.? There is a wide range of essential oils derived from plants and other botanicals, many of which have the ability to promote different effects on the body and mind.?

‘What is essential about oil?’ I can hear you ask. In fact the term comes from the word ‘essence’ in its archaic meaning of having a perfume, and an ‘essential’ oil is one that contains the perfume or aroma of the plant from which it is extracted. So essential oils are oils that are extracted from plants and that are perfumed in a similar way to the plant: thus essential rose oil smells like roses, and so on.

Scented candles are made from wax and other wax-like substances such as stearine or stearic acid. The essential oils that are used to perfume them are soluble in molten waxes, and so can be combined with the wax mixture prior to being poured into candle moulds. When the candle is burned the wax melts and the aroma of the essential oil, now in its liquid state, is released. These can be very concentrated oils and so it takes only a little in the air to give a wonderful smell, characteristic of the plant from it has been derived.

Reed diffusers, on the other hand, use a liquid form of the oil dissolved in a carrier oil such as grapeseed oil, sunflower oil and coconut oil. The reeds are placed into a small vase or jug with the bottom immersed in then oil. The oil is carried up the reeds by capillary action and as the volatile essential oil evaporates, its aroma is released into the room.  No heat is involved, and so reed oil diffusers offer the advantage of scented candles in there is no flame, and hence no fire hazard if left working overnight or when nobody is at home.

Many people use candles during the evening when they are in the room, generally in a lounge or even in a hallway, while fragrance diffusers are used to prepare a bathroom with a beautiful aroma and can be left working while the residents are at work.

Each has its own specific uses, and both are available in a wide range of aromas. It is important to understand that the essential oils used in scented candles are not actually burned as such, but that the aroma comes from the hot melted wax that has the oil dissolved within it.  The oils are very volatile and also highly combustible, so yes, when the wax burns at the tip of the wick so does the essential oil, but that is not where the bulk of the scent comes from. That is emitted from the evaporating oil in the pool of wax below the wick, and in the wick itself.

In that respect, the candle and diffuser operate in the same way, whether the diffuser is a reed diffuser, an electrical diffuser heating a bath of oil or a candle burning below a bath of oil. In that respect the scented candle is also a diffuser, whereby the oil is evaporated from the pool of melted wax below the wick in the same as it is from any other heat source.

So scented candles and reed diffusers operate by means of intrinsically the same science, but to most people they are no more than different aromatic solutions to a sweet-smelling home.Indulge yourself in luxurious home fragrances and feel the welcoming scent of a beautiful scented candle or reed diffuser help you unwind after a stressful day..
